The Colette Moneta is still my go-to knit dress pattern. I need to replace my previous makes because they've reached the end of their life span. I've made it so many times that there really isn't anything left to say about it, so you're just getting pictures. </div>

<div>
I say this every time I sew a pattern from a Big 4 company: I don't know why I don't do it more often. I like everything that I sew from the bigger companies. This time, I paired a rayon from Style Maker Fabrics with Vogue 9297 and I love the result!</div>

<div>
The fabric is wonderful: It's got some texture to it but is still soft and floaty. I highly recommend it if it's still available. It's sheer so I lined it with a basic white cotton.</div>

It's a Very Easy Vogue pattern, so there wasn't much to the construction. One front bodice with darts, one back bodice with darts, and then two pieces for the front and back bottom portion. I used an invisible zipper instead of the standard one it called for, and I stitched the belt to the back so that it wouldn't slip around as I move. <div>

<div>
In the past several months I've had several makes that were tragically bad, and so to being the summer sewing season I picked something I know I like and can make successfully: The Colette Parfait dress. This was one of the first patterns I ever made and I've always loved it. </div>

I added piping to the gathered pockets:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYrNuURc-B9aNgnB5UUPSV-oH-qOYoyOabikSEZRhx9dq_2HJHxwZd7MJacID8Yj1FLaLA6np5nEb8RHAf7U-hgO7GLkBAjTXGo9klKfQQbDwlrQjSYMBbde5aexIpa9XJxuLzevatBD8/s1600/IMG_1212.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYrNuURc-B9aNgnB5UUPSV-oH-qOYoyOabikSEZRhx9dq_2HJHxwZd7MJacID8Yj1FLaLA6np5nEb8RHAf7U-hgO7GLkBAjTXGo9klKfQQbDwlrQjSYMBbde5aexIpa9XJxuLzevatBD8/s320/IMG_1212.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
The fabric is Liberty of London and it's sheer, so I omitted the facings and added a lining. I didn't understand how to do that when I first started, so I'm going to describe it here in case anybody needs it: It's overwhelming when you're first starting out, but it's actually really easy. </div>
<div>
1. When sewing the Liberty of London fabric, I only used one front midriff piece and one back midriff piece. I put them front sides together with the bodice and skirt, and after stitching the seam I serged the seam allowance.</div>
<div>
2. The invisible zipper is sewn to the shell fabric. </div>
<div>
3. I used a simple white cotton for the lining. I put it together exactly like I did the shell fabric, with no facings and only one front and back midriff piece. I also cut the skirt pieces one inch shorter than the shell fabric so they don't poke out of the hem.</div>
<div>
4. With right sides together and the edges serged, I places the lining fabric on top of the invisible zipper and sewed right down the zipper on top of the lining fabric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqZeDcnrZh3O-DfMbOVD9OZnxZ5lsmXlutLOqgU2FvKfIkxv4ts8MIomLbpYgOD51BO4M5hNaCJDRFFAv6LXxpDvhyphenhyphenkq9PWp2fuZdETNDnZXtcy6yNxn11LNMVnea0inAS2MDwJUKfLdI/s1600/IMG_1161.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqZeDcnrZh3O-DfMbOVD9OZnxZ5lsmXlutLOqgU2FvKfIkxv4ts8MIomLbpYgOD51BO4M5hNaCJDRFFAv6LXxpDvhyphenhyphenkq9PWp2fuZdETNDnZXtcy6yNxn11LNMVnea0inAS2MDwJUKfLdI/s320/IMG_1161.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div>
5. Switching to a regular foot, I pinned the top of the shell and lining together and stitched right across the top. You'll also notice that I put my gathers right in the middle of the bodice instead of under each cup. I like it better that way. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjthRZxdpX7dcYBHDmmhevOvVlueEd68D3VSBhlstNXlsUWm2UH6XeOptysshh-FJmT_KQrOoU2ixtqTKEgurd5MTf0pf3q2GM_MOdPabFn-PZx4yPpJNHTRryj4AW_2W3PXlFU0fErc38/s1600/IMG_1162.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjthRZxdpX7dcYBHDmmhevOvVlueEd68D3VSBhlstNXlsUWm2UH6XeOptysshh-FJmT_KQrOoU2ixtqTKEgurd5MTf0pf3q2GM_MOdPabFn-PZx4yPpJNHTRryj4AW_2W3PXlFU0fErc38/s320/IMG_1162.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
6. I then flipped it right side out, pressed the seam, and topstitched it. I know an invisible zipper is supposed to be invisible, but I always find that the fabric gets caught in the zipper even if I press it. I sew a straight topstitch along the zipper to keep everything tucked in where it's supposed to be. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Happy sewing!</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This <a href="https://newhorizonsdesigns.com/product/tami-revolution-double-hoodie/">hoodie</a> is, hands down, the best thing that has come out of the 2018 RTW fast. I saw a version on the group Facebook page earlier in the year and my jaw dropped. I knew I had to make one. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIncMjbB0cyLP731WMpXBkwyLsEEpZ4LuqZezg28UlsZJS4Ww47_L6a8c5p0UpAswqlNsViWGUlc9sQ5p90-0bqnvoNYY-H8junyGoJqrMWIAjt4AjkaT0Z8fWdEviiuGTx9rpa3xkTrc/s1600/IMG_1041+%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1068" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIncMjbB0cyLP731WMpXBkwyLsEEpZ4LuqZezg28UlsZJS4Ww47_L6a8c5p0UpAswqlNsViWGUlc9sQ5p90-0bqnvoNYY-H8junyGoJqrMWIAjt4AjkaT0Z8fWdEviiuGTx9rpa3xkTrc/s320/IMG_1041+%25282%2529.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The hoodie has a slim fit, so the instructions suggest going up a size if you want more room. I made the size that corresponds to my measurements and it fits just fine. It has shape to it but there is still room to move.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The instructions are incredibly easy to follow, although I did get a little bit confused on the difference between the double hood and conversion hood instructions. I've gotten to the point in my sewing career where I don't have to pay that much attention to the instructions, so I just did what felt intuitive. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The fabric is from Style Maker Fabrics. The navy blue fabric has incredible recovery and I wouldn't mind having two more tops in the same material. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The hood is enormous when it's pulled up, which makes me feel like I'm in the Lord of the Rings. </div>

I rarely sew summer dresses with sleeves, but I loved the bodice on the Sew Over It Charlotte dress so much that I went for it. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKBTN7Gbld8O8Dl4ECT0CVpH8YKr3-vXhrOOGN3AFYa1zKSczeKi_eLs4-mczVA7AOitMOFlyaGHaZVdr0GgboLZ8Suek5lgzZESYlB3orVJ4w0W4gBs2vO9ymIgu3mrNEMk33ynv4tm4/s1600/IMG_1001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKBTN7Gbld8O8Dl4ECT0CVpH8YKr3-vXhrOOGN3AFYa1zKSczeKi_eLs4-mczVA7AOitMOFlyaGHaZVdr0GgboLZ8Suek5lgzZESYlB3orVJ4w0W4gBs2vO9ymIgu3mrNEMk33ynv4tm4/s320/IMG_1001.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div>
<span style="color: black;">The pattern directions are very easy to follow. No big thrills on putting it together, but I did have to sew six machine stitches where the bodice overlaps because the gaping was really bad without an anchor there. The lapels fold back over the stitches and you can't even see that they are there. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
I haven't had a new dress in quite awhile! Last summer I only made shorts and read a bunch of books so this summer I'm trying to focus on adding new dresses into my wardrobe. They are so easy to wear in the summer heat and I need more in my rotation.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR8tjmUi9ybsvNlqzQvQ2V1CF60y2QGHc5qpQGX_GmpQfiuUbyUtS29Izn5gBQcxKeqQzeatV725imIwa-7-bt68JkXD9LNR1gMXLMwxFZeDWBND7wGuLG0JOnKHy7tMqx6qyp0opFbYc/s1600/IMG_0986.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR8tjmUi9ybsvNlqzQvQ2V1CF60y2QGHc5qpQGX_GmpQfiuUbyUtS29Izn5gBQcxKeqQzeatV725imIwa-7-bt68JkXD9LNR1gMXLMwxFZeDWBND7wGuLG0JOnKHy7tMqx6qyp0opFbYc/s320/IMG_0986.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div>
This is the third time I've made the Christine Haynes Sylvie dress. Once I find something that works I stick with it! I like the somewhat relaxed fit, gathered skirt and big pockets. I chose the Cotton + Steel rayon fabric before I decided which pattern to pair it with and the Sylvie came up the winner.</div>

<div>
I finally dove in to bra-making and I was surprised to learn it's really not that hard! The most intimidating part for me was just getting started. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My initial hesitation was that I didn't know where to begin buying the supplies. I've sewn enough garments that I can find my way around most patterns and fabrics, but bra-making is so completely new to me that I felt lost by the supplies list. This led to procrastination. I would surf the internet to fabrics and then get up and walk away from the computer because I just didn't know what to pick. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I chose as my first pattern the Boylston Bra by Orange Lingerie. Thankfully, Tailor Made offers bra kits and I decided to go with one instead of trying to find all of the elastics and fabrics on my own. That was a great decision and one I would recommend to everyone who is just starting out. The whole shebang shows up in a bag and you're ready to go.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also invested in the Craftsy course titled Sewing Bras: Construction and Fit with Beverly Johnson. That was another great decision. She patiently walked me through every step of the process and made sewing the pattern seem extra easy. I liked her so much I bought the next class in her series titled Sewing Bras: Foam, Lace and Beyond. I noticed that she also offers kits through her store. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTvEVptYowN0MMvWVEHZKkSxDfAdWvjesKkHV4tg8QyDwRt4Dz2Y79HXXZE9M7WncxltG8MdAEojioI-V5SJrOd1DBJutGoAWGclFWHptOCwU0_vDE5QRKSMAL6FUnBnT28Ln_uovU7W8/s1600/IMG_0967.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTvEVptYowN0MMvWVEHZKkSxDfAdWvjesKkHV4tg8QyDwRt4Dz2Y79HXXZE9M7WncxltG8MdAEojioI-V5SJrOd1DBJutGoAWGclFWHptOCwU0_vDE5QRKSMAL6FUnBnT28Ln_uovU7W8/s320/IMG_0967.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(This is my practice bra so the underwires in the center aren't bartacked down yet.)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When I was midway through I realized that I was sewing with lace which I've not sewn with before. Not only was I sewing a bra for the first time, but I was sewing with lace for the first time. If I had it to do over again I think I might pick a different fabric than lace to start with, although I don't have major regrets there. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I enjoyed the process of making this and I believe I'll make more in the future. I think the thing that made it worthwhile to me is it's a completely new skill set for me and therefore felt exciting and challenging. I love learning new things and I'm sure that's part of the excitement of sewing for others as well. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you've considered making a bra, I encourage you to jump right in. It's really not that hard. Seriously. It's NOT that hard. </div>

I ordered several fabrics from Style Maker Fabrics all at one time several months ago. I prioritized the other three ahead of this red wool which left me making a lined wool coat in the spring. I was determined to finish it because I didn't want a UFO which worked out ok because it snowed yesterday and my kids went sledding on Easter.</div>

<span style="color: #000120;">I like the peplum quite a bit but I'm a little undecided on the double collar. At first I liked it a lot, but I think it would work better if it wasn't quite so large. I interfaced both collar pieces as suggested which made it really bulky. Each collar piece is two pieces sewn together, which accounts for five layers when the collar pieces are sewn to the neckline. I broke three needles just attaching the collar pieces to the neckline. If I had it to do again I would interface just one collar piece instead of two out of the four and I wouldn't interface along the seamline. </span></div>

<div>
I had a major disaster occur on one of my facing buttonholes. I chose bound buttonholes and for some reason I decided that I wasn't going to add my facing buttonholes until I had already attached the facing to the coat. It was a horrible idea and I have no idea why I thought it was a wise choice. The top buttonhole is so close to the neckline that it was terribly awkward sewing it on. The real problem occurred when I sewed the interfacing to the wrong side of the facing instead of the right side. The above picture was my best attempt to salvage it by removing the first one I did and sewing it on right which was made harder by the fact that I had already cut into the fabric. It looked hideous so I made a separate buttonhole and hand-stitched it to the facing. It's not great but it looks better than it did. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjorP_EpTpNs2wzsW9vAL3avNcYZhR53xnFnCqVcpVQy49dp7RBvgZ_mJPj4-MYcT0TIHea0WuFJp-b062lUQ4sL0OrPD_0Hc3N0ok7rdqADad8E1_ROG_sh79I9CZAHohMk2NGA4u3Xgk/s1600/IMG_0958.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjorP_EpTpNs2wzsW9vAL3avNcYZhR53xnFnCqVcpVQy49dp7RBvgZ_mJPj4-MYcT0TIHea0WuFJp-b062lUQ4sL0OrPD_0Hc3N0ok7rdqADad8E1_ROG_sh79I9CZAHohMk2NGA4u3Xgk/s320/IMG_0958.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
In addition to sewing it on the right side of the garment, in the future I'm going to use fabric instead of interfacing for the facing buttonholes. The interfacing looks messy to me even if I do it right and I think the fabric will work just as well. Then I can stitch around the facing buttonhole instead of steaming it to make it adhere. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div>
My intention for 2018 is to draw up a bodice sloper and create tops, but here I am with another pair of pants. I can't decide what I think about the Closet Case Patterns Sasha Trousers, and it has nothing to do with the pattern itself. The pattern is great, but I swore off cropped pants years ago because I think they make my legs look really stumpy (technical term right there). However, I am in search of a pattern to go with the dark teal stretch denim I purchased from Guthrie and Ghani several months ago, and when I saw the Sasha pattern I thought I would test it out to see if it would work. I'm considering this my wearable muslin, but I'm still undecided on what I think about it! </div>

<div>
I'm absolutely in love with the fabric, which is a stretch denim from Style Maker Fabrics. So much so that I'm considering buying 20 yards of it so I can have some on hand for the rest of my life. You can dress up this pattern for work with non-denim fabric, or make it more casual with denim. My top is a Sewaholic Oakridge blouse that I made many moons ago. Alas, my jacket is RTW from JCrew. I bought it years ago and will never part with it. </div>

<div>
The welt pockets are a nice touch, although when I study this picture they don't look lined up. I didn't notice that before! I didn't add belt loops due to laziness. I'm a veeerrry lazy seamstress lately. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9hFWbr2B3t7EbnCkr-zWaJcc6YKdsD-fxEYWCF9JwPuyI9juEgwz5T1vpGzmxXtt9oapk-APHYrKLo7XNB9HrIAVev9yG2o6zWCOZT1mr5AxA67qXRUk2iU4JBgTa21AO-L5O4zyP81M/s1600/IMG_0936.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9hFWbr2B3t7EbnCkr-zWaJcc6YKdsD-fxEYWCF9JwPuyI9juEgwz5T1vpGzmxXtt9oapk-APHYrKLo7XNB9HrIAVev9yG2o6zWCOZT1mr5AxA67qXRUk2iU4JBgTa21AO-L5O4zyP81M/s320/IMG_0936.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
There are a couple of things I would do differently if I make this pattern again. First, after topstitching the fly shield, I would serge the straight open edge of the shield so I didn't have to serge it to the fly extension after I assembled the fly. I accidently serged both sides of the fly extensions instead of just one side like it says in the instructions. I would do that again so both extensions and the straight edge of the shield are serged prior to being assembled. </div>
<div>
Second, my waistband is a train wreck at the front. The instructions say to fold the waistband facing back at the corner when you stitch the waistband at the center front. I did that, but in the future I think I will just do it like I always do, which is to sew the center front without the folded corner and then tuck the facing under to finish. I think that's just personal preference. I couldn't pull the folded corner technique off to get the finish I wanted. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC6SgL4gSE1UrCvqilZzXXM17JfGlWKRDdpezmwzPPjr-qNDaSo2vKKCg108ldaSL2glg2eaUCryhzrlD7_MetPuYfCFTuPSw5-VlZwatT9yYMJ6yxIrzpJH-IJlq53lYNWP37kx8apW0/s1600/IMG_0934.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC6SgL4gSE1UrCvqilZzXXM17JfGlWKRDdpezmwzPPjr-qNDaSo2vKKCg108ldaSL2glg2eaUCryhzrlD7_MetPuYfCFTuPSw5-VlZwatT9yYMJ6yxIrzpJH-IJlq53lYNWP37kx8apW0/s320/IMG_0934.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div>
And here's the obligatory shot of the back view. The model pictures at the pattern launch seemed to be extremely tight in the butt. My measurements are a 28 waist and 38 hips. I cut an 8 in the waistband and then graded that out to a 10 in the hips. I sewed a 5/8 inch seam allowance in the inseam, but only a 1/2 inch seam allowance at the top of the pants (prior to adding the waistband). When I hit the pocket I gradually moved out to a 5/8 seam allowance for the rest of the leg seam. The result is a form-fitting pant through the hips but it's not skin-tight. Also, the fabric is very stretchy with good recovery. </div>
<div>
I think this might be my last pair of pants for awhile. We will see!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
I'm pretty sure that I'm one of the last people in the sewing community to make the Grainline Archer shirt. This will be a short post because I don't think there's anything that hasn't been covered already!<br />
<br />
I've developed a habit of not making a muslin and just winging it. Had I done one, I would have known that I need to lengthen the sleeves and had an inch or so to the bodice length. It's wearable as it is, but I would like it better if both the sleeves and the bodice were longer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhezKdZOIIGUpNXC_iIHUQ3TFOxWhzIyo6Ljg0a84m698wKKbnjW1Zd_wkmLLoOP3eINyt64fzCFHoVkBpLn7uljJ4Vk4KmmmRgx6RR9EguhfMZPNOqA1cvnI9NWJ0p_yJ9HhEyG5gdJzQ/s1600/IMG_0914.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhezKdZOIIGUpNXC_iIHUQ3TFOxWhzIyo6Ljg0a84m698wKKbnjW1Zd_wkmLLoOP3eINyt64fzCFHoVkBpLn7uljJ4Vk4KmmmRgx6RR9EguhfMZPNOqA1cvnI9NWJ0p_yJ9HhEyG5gdJzQ/s320/IMG_0914.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I usually stay away from plaid because I don't want to pattern match. It intimidates me, but I do think I'm getting better at it. When I took these pictures I realized that the pattern matching between the sleeves and the bodice is better than I thought it was.<br />
<br />
The fabric is flannel from Style Maker Fabrics. <br />
<br />
Happy sewing!<br />

I've been busy sewing but not busy blogging! I'm on a mission to make clothes I need, so once they are finished I throw them on and go on with life instead of pausing to take pictures. <br />
The Helen's Closet Blackwood Cardigan is going to become a new favorite pattern of mine. I love how it's an open front that sits close to the body. I am not a fan of boxy cuts, and I chose the shorter version because I don't gravitate to longer cardigans either. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDJscsORVy_t1YpMiVbBIH7wICyPz6qbBiHk3Y2mGyfAFQopp0f0npxDLJfir3Sw4deYoNZJ1d3PRFAOBcphkK5Ox0ePy7SI6bGYBkL_tyDp1op944Df0wYY_z9JNlr2YJKPzHCJNK54I/s1600/IMG_0895.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDJscsORVy_t1YpMiVbBIH7wICyPz6qbBiHk3Y2mGyfAFQopp0f0npxDLJfir3Sw4deYoNZJ1d3PRFAOBcphkK5Ox0ePy7SI6bGYBkL_tyDp1op944Df0wYY_z9JNlr2YJKPzHCJNK54I/s320/IMG_0895.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
The Blackwood Cardigan is easily a one day project if you're focused. There are minimal pieces to cut, and construction consists of sewing the fronts and back together, putting on the sleeves, putting on the cuffs, sewing the bottom band and sewing the front band. No closures!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Fabric for the cardigan came from <a href="https://stylemakerfabrics.com/">Style Maker Fabrics</a>. Don't you love the color? The quality is great. The shirt is the Sewaholic Granville in fabric from <a href="https://hellgatefabrics.com/">Hell Gate fabrics</a>. </div>

I made three new pairs of Birkin Flares in September and October, which brings my total to 5. I've blogged the two previous pairs before <a href="http://evolutionofasewinggoddess.blogspot.com/2017/01/birkin-flares.html">here</a> and<a href="http://evolutionofasewinggoddess.blogspot.com/2017/04/birkin-flares-two-colette-violets.html"> here</a>, so I won't go into details here. I like the fit through the hips and the flare that covers my shoes, so why not have more than one or two pairs? The above fabric is Ralph Lauren stretch denim from Mood Fabrics. The following two fabrics are also from Style Maker Fabrics.</div>

I have no regrets! I did manage to make three pair of shorts: two Maritimes and one Gina short, which is the new pattern from SBCC. I always wonder how similar patterns compare to each other, so I thought it might be helpful to describe them for you.<br />

The green shorts are the Maritime pattern and the teal shorts are the Gina pattern. The Maritime shorts have a bit looser or flared fit throughout the leg. <br />
<br />
A big difference between the patterns is the dart in the back of the Gina pattern. The Maritime has no dart, which results in the Gina short having a curvier fit throughout the back than the Maritime.<br />

I think the Maritime short makes your booty look a little flatter while the Gina short makes it look a curvier. We all want different things!<br />

I made the Maritime shorts first, and I found the instructions for sewing the fly and zipper extremely easy to follow. The Gina instructions list the steps in a different order, and since I made the Maritime shorts first the Gina fly instructions felt out of order to me and resulted in what I feel is a less desirable looking fly. Also, the Gina fly facing is about an inch shorter then the Maritime facing, which exposes the zipper at the bottom. If you are new to sewing pant zippers and fly facings, I would choose the Maritime pattern first. The Gina doesn't give instructions for finishing your zipper pieces, and you'll want those if you're new. <br />

I also have to be completely transparent and say that I had a lot of energy when I was sewing the Maritime shorts at the beginning of the summer, and was completely lazy when I was sewing the Ginas. L-A-Z-Y. I think you can tell by my workmanship but I'm not planning on wearing my pants inside out so it's my secret!<br />
<br />
The Gina shorts have a cuff at the bottom while the Maritime shorts are just turned under and stitched.<br />

I like them both for different reasons, and they aren't so similar that you have to choose one over the other. Both shorts are made with twill from Style Maker fabrics. I think the fabric is part of the summer sale so hurry over!<br />

I fell in love with this pattern when I saw it's release this spring. I usually stick with indie patterns but I had to make this one! <br />

I initially wanted to make View C with the contrasting waist panels but I couldn't find the right contrasting fabric to go with this loud Liberty print I bought on sale from Craftsy. I opted instead for View A with the sleeve caps from C instead of the sleeves. I still want to do the contrasting waistband option at some point. I can't get it out of my head. I love mixing prints. <br />

The fabric is so busy that you can't see all of the great details like the gathered waistband and gathering at the bust. Those would be easy to showcase in a solid print. I made two simple changes: 1) I inserted the zipper all the way up to the top of the left side because I find it impossible to put a dress on when there is an inch of fabric sewn together above the zipper. 2) I sewed up about 2 additional inches from the circle listed in the instructions on the front band because it was so low that it bordered on indecent. It doesn't lay as flat that way, but I don't think I would feel comfortable wearing it if I had only sewn to the circle as instructed. <br />

The only design feature that gives me pause is the gathering at the middle back above the waistband. I think I would like a smoother look back there without the gathering to make it look less bulky. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The sewing is straightforward. I barely glanced at the instructions because it's pretty easy to see how it all goes together. <br />
<br />
I think this one is worth a try!<br />

I just noticed how long it's been since I blogged. I had a men's shirt pattern go south on me in February, and then I made three pieces that I decided to blog together instead of separately. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpkKCAW0lz7AgT6ttY6tU-PqbIyjRp05WXHjDxincsJaxMpQ0Ga1bNYfl3DhNWjeXIkOayZeNUtTHX1u39mCODEt12eKrqTdpxU_ByKFQG9gQKnbGl1D-9cDeJW3ljZGKpgx_35B1-Yy0/s1600/Birkins+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpkKCAW0lz7AgT6ttY6tU-PqbIyjRp05WXHjDxincsJaxMpQ0Ga1bNYfl3DhNWjeXIkOayZeNUtTHX1u39mCODEt12eKrqTdpxU_ByKFQG9gQKnbGl1D-9cDeJW3ljZGKpgx_35B1-Yy0/s320/Birkins+2.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
I'm obsessed with Birkin Flares, and I'm also obsessed with this Cornflower Blue stretch denim Style Maker fabrics. I'm almost afraid to wear them because I love them so much. Kind of like when you don't use your fine china. If I wear a hole in them I will dissolve in a puddle of tears. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHS7tSHA4mknR3gQ_ysxXFXnG91b4BaujZlGJA_ExlhQkaoUGsbYNo2iN9NKda2KnEMeCGn6sWwfP8JP4h9D38q_GY1mfxn8NeBfiZxkZortV7Jupjo7tspFXJ1f7IN5bJaIIL608pVhU/s1600/Birkins+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHS7tSHA4mknR3gQ_ysxXFXnG91b4BaujZlGJA_ExlhQkaoUGsbYNo2iN9NKda2KnEMeCGn6sWwfP8JP4h9D38q_GY1mfxn8NeBfiZxkZortV7Jupjo7tspFXJ1f7IN5bJaIIL608pVhU/s320/Birkins+3.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
The Birkin pattern is really easy to follow and super easy to fit. If you are thinking about sewing jeans this is a great pattern to start with. The fabric is so high quality and the recovery is great. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Colette Violet top is one of those patterns that I didn't try when it first came out, and now that I've sewn it up I don't know why I didn't do it a long time ago.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

My wardrobe was in need of casual short sleeved tops for spring and the Violet is perfect. All fabric for the Violet tops was purchased at the locally owned fabric store Sarah's Fabrics in Lawrence, KS<br />

The main fabric for this one is a Moda lawn and the contrasting collar and bias tape fabric is Alexander Henry quilting cotton. I love mixing prints and this pattern is a great one for that. <br />

I accomplished something major: I made jeans! Specifically Birkin Flares from Baste+Gather. I feel so joyful. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-BtWAfidhNwfvCa4M1hy-jv333ib7_Buxt4TbSNHDVt49RN4mhX6_uNTuBfwYg5R-9JakJOa-fX286K32sj9uNGOBvezru-qX2T0QjzqTEDSt9b68hXbY2o69B82Q_yr2sptZwwx_s-E/s1600/IMG_0740.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-BtWAfidhNwfvCa4M1hy-jv333ib7_Buxt4TbSNHDVt49RN4mhX6_uNTuBfwYg5R-9JakJOa-fX286K32sj9uNGOBvezru-qX2T0QjzqTEDSt9b68hXbY2o69B82Q_yr2sptZwwx_s-E/s320/IMG_0740.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
My material is burnt orange corduroy from IndieSew and it's great. I snatched it up right when it was advertised and have no regrets. I went rogue for this pattern and didn't make a muslin. I like the fit. It's right under my belly button and there is negative ease in the hips which means they actually stay up when I walk around.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDx2DHuoIu9IcBoRUVcqMiTBp1GBSNwN1SzNlck7jwHawNdrIhN9UfuMFiJwr1ZeaAxnhDDqLm7a3I7yHiSmO6gxxBPXSxrrZIdvDWfjpRGGeZ0nUB3kUES9vdnQdllFG90VaXLHzvvtw/s1600/IMG_0741.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDx2DHuoIu9IcBoRUVcqMiTBp1GBSNwN1SzNlck7jwHawNdrIhN9UfuMFiJwr1ZeaAxnhDDqLm7a3I7yHiSmO6gxxBPXSxrrZIdvDWfjpRGGeZ0nUB3kUES9vdnQdllFG90VaXLHzvvtw/s320/IMG_0741.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
Everybody says jeans aren't hard, and they actually aren't. There is a sewalong on the Baste and Gather website that is fabulous and really helped through the challenging bits. <br />
<br />
Close up of the front:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGGxFuSX0bXyUkp8lxBKrgXbWgWLwbfVDuCHyE_8CC5c22PyRZujbf66MlmWbtL2ll-BzYFIOjwAC75SBksSfxIROKRZUa6gy1GFp_eUEONMMQIKsbSL4OdmzJ_t4CUK3Uu2HsKWZ4oAE/s1600/073.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGGxFuSX0bXyUkp8lxBKrgXbWgWLwbfVDuCHyE_8CC5c22PyRZujbf66MlmWbtL2ll-BzYFIOjwAC75SBksSfxIROKRZUa6gy1GFp_eUEONMMQIKsbSL4OdmzJ_t4CUK3Uu2HsKWZ4oAE/s320/073.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Close up of the back:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh27B7UpLSI8hilZOh_eKwaNnNVO56EL6-xP8SirBPy7z4-9lZBSrwhU_pMijur-QpeZUBy2VS4D4GwflIdKI0ruasszhzLdnUWdbGe7fv0TegzHxnypIgPYC9cjfWj_5WlG2cWnvNAUVc/s1600/075.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh27B7UpLSI8hilZOh_eKwaNnNVO56EL6-xP8SirBPy7z4-9lZBSrwhU_pMijur-QpeZUBy2VS4D4GwflIdKI0ruasszhzLdnUWdbGe7fv0TegzHxnypIgPYC9cjfWj_5WlG2cWnvNAUVc/s320/075.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
You'll notice that there is something weird going on with the back yoke. The piece didn't look right when I cut it out, but since I didn't make a muslin I just went along with it. The middle part of it seemed to have too much of a diagonal as compared to the sewalong pictures that seemed to continue up in a straight line from the leg. I'll have to revisit that next time because the extra fabric makes the yoke wavy. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFTkh11KODLtGQZZ2-X5Zv4LEC6-YdJGB3JgByiAEfg5J25i_XvADFSbTXeCfv85W_ILq4CS7qWnWbKx1nxH9WQyK2sSWqjs1Gd3XSOmfY0lNqt_x8jItCc1AvOUtUm0ytuhhy0XO_01I/s1600/IMG_0747.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFTkh11KODLtGQZZ2-X5Zv4LEC6-YdJGB3JgByiAEfg5J25i_XvADFSbTXeCfv85W_ILq4CS7qWnWbKx1nxH9WQyK2sSWqjs1Gd3XSOmfY0lNqt_x8jItCc1AvOUtUm0ytuhhy0XO_01I/s320/IMG_0747.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I do not plan to wear a shirt tucked in with these and the rest is satisfactory, so I'm OK with that. Being the opposite of Type A really helps in sewing....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I enjoy topstitching quite a bit. It makes it all look put together. My sewing machine kept spitting out my needle when I tried to do the narrow row of zigzag on the pockets. I eventually had to give up on that after doing the best I could. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I found this pretty turquoise corduroy at my local fabric store (<a href="http://sarahsfabrics.com/">Sarah's Fabrics</a>) and decided to make another SBCC Moto Chic Jacket with it because my <a href="http://evolutionofasewinggoddess.blogspot.com/2016/02/sbcc-moto-chic-jacket.html">first one</a> gets lots of compliments. This was a hard one to find a matching zipper for, so I substituted circular buttonholes. The Craftsy course Couture Finishing Techniques with Alison Smith helped me with those. <br />

I felt like I borrowed Beyoncé's wind machine for these pictures. The one above is suitable but if I'm being transparent almost all of the others looked like this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbMZoTRYXQruPqgNAjK8_1AvPNnxuxP_-mGBUGTmIEf2e97svlvWxGvpwl6idaDknjGmcwOa_zs_t9KQXz8IrL5GOZJCMOeLhI1QuUFSctZ3WBsW6NZsGYpnTBT0Up1Q4Xbtv4qIBSU_0/s1600/SBCC+Moto+6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbMZoTRYXQruPqgNAjK8_1AvPNnxuxP_-mGBUGTmIEf2e97svlvWxGvpwl6idaDknjGmcwOa_zs_t9KQXz8IrL5GOZJCMOeLhI1QuUFSctZ3WBsW6NZsGYpnTBT0Up1Q4Xbtv4qIBSU_0/s320/SBCC+Moto+6.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
Not okay! I could have waited for another day, but I don't have closure on a project until I've blogged it and I'm itching to move on to something else.<br />
<br />
Besides the buttonholes, the only other change I made was to the lining. The pattern lining doesn't extend to the hem, which leaves some of the innards exposed. I extended the lining piece with the intention of slip stitching it to the corduroy hem. I didn't take into account the gathered peplum, and so I had to settle for a free floating lining hem. <br />

I've been made fun of for not owning one single black garment. But why choose black when you can choose, say, orange? Or a happy little print? Bright colors and prints aren't always appropriate for the occasion though, and that's where this dress comes in.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB8tVwnqECoXxUHbggo7H0Ouv1XNIgoU6XmeJf-JLSnHr6ekuH2cegiCIPWHAPUT-MTZChTQCxZJbYqMwYHlkuykA5L27c-ooTEPoo7UCkq80whEnWk9ldMaCt4KuF7VywddW37D6Jf1Y/s1600/Wren+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB8tVwnqECoXxUHbggo7H0Ouv1XNIgoU6XmeJf-JLSnHr6ekuH2cegiCIPWHAPUT-MTZChTQCxZJbYqMwYHlkuykA5L27c-ooTEPoo7UCkq80whEnWk9ldMaCt4KuF7VywddW37D6Jf1Y/s320/Wren+4.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I needed a dark dress, and I had purchased the Colette Wren pattern awhile back but never got around to it. I had also picked up this very thick fabric of unknown origin from the discount bin from a nearby Hancocks some months ago, and I decided I would combine the two.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGcf0vwoHrA8tZF6T0DVKMuZs7TLY0uku67k9LETnOrrDn-czFPVx8FJnRvPJG6IHwaQIKh-hwBiw6-Jjm9JvJTfi_87cfYN_bEJyQmprx5gRDcXc342TwJhEBBiWcysv7HZ61WKJl7wQ/s1600/Wren+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGcf0vwoHrA8tZF6T0DVKMuZs7TLY0uku67k9LETnOrrDn-czFPVx8FJnRvPJG6IHwaQIKh-hwBiw6-Jjm9JvJTfi_87cfYN_bEJyQmprx5gRDcXc342TwJhEBBiWcysv7HZ61WKJl7wQ/s320/Wren+1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love the pattern. I'll be making more because I enjoy the bodice quite a bit. I also like the fabric well enough, but something happened at the waistband and I think it's a result of the fabric being made of some sort of synthetic something-or-other. Do you see how it bulges and rides up on my right side at the waistline? It's so strange!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO5yAGxm0E4kTKF81fET6q-FjUQzo1SgT3kYWa0oH7wmZx2wnRqpQhTiewxME7VWnx6UhmWtVAbG-nvk3r4FA8nmfc1sJh1Dsz4ONy2IGSkyLdSc_nZ9nZioqcnfsJHPJ3nKl9rqZ4tAM/s1600/Wren+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO5yAGxm0E4kTKF81fET6q-FjUQzo1SgT3kYWa0oH7wmZx2wnRqpQhTiewxME7VWnx6UhmWtVAbG-nvk3r4FA8nmfc1sJh1Dsz4ONy2IGSkyLdSc_nZ9nZioqcnfsJHPJ3nKl9rqZ4tAM/s320/Wren+2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I have to constantly pull it down for it not to do that. And who wants to constantly be pulling something down? I thought the heaviness of the skirt would pull the bodice down, but no. I tried to press it from the inside, but melted the material and had to stop. A press cloth didn't even help. This fabric does not like heat and unfortunately I think heat is what it needs. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheu-PPZOeTgnYrMZiOdq0DpYbL7lvh5I3IC6nX2z8UtU2ZXrT0iYZoAponIrPgwSkT7IZp51DYr5aMYV7010Z-wWUFV715GGEwEaO6jtYEOis31bhynobssmwzZV7KyLCRbSsLZmTWTgo/s1600/Wren+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheu-PPZOeTgnYrMZiOdq0DpYbL7lvh5I3IC6nX2z8UtU2ZXrT0iYZoAponIrPgwSkT7IZp51DYr5aMYV7010Z-wWUFV715GGEwEaO6jtYEOis31bhynobssmwzZV7KyLCRbSsLZmTWTgo/s320/Wren+3.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
I actually almost threw it in the reject pile because of the waistline, but then I decided I would give it a chance and wear it once. I think it was reasonably successful, but I'm going to consider this a wearable muslin for this pattern which, again, I really do love.Evolution of a Sewing Goddesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14566455725725915803noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6276637246553053763.post-49028709595558533802016-10-19T06:30:00.000-07:002016-10-19T06:30:08.376-07:00Actually, the winner is....Unfortunately after a week I've been unsuccessful in making contact with the original winner. I have to be up front from the beginning and disclose that I stole the fabric combo idea for this tunic from a dog's outfit on Dogs of Instagram. His polka dot/floral shirt was on point!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7AoUlLYqJgSHmuvwvSQvVechiAuul-Y8QDrzIDcuEWR9Xq851f5g-gNli35n3FeYYeyteBlHDESqLcVr-D7Dg8D8pwj80pG12gZVKLplPxS6QmF0LfWmYBClceT3eGIgZj3fTWYOIHTU/s1600/220.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7AoUlLYqJgSHmuvwvSQvVechiAuul-Y8QDrzIDcuEWR9Xq851f5g-gNli35n3FeYYeyteBlHDESqLcVr-D7Dg8D8pwj80pG12gZVKLplPxS6QmF0LfWmYBClceT3eGIgZj3fTWYOIHTU/s320/220.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
If you look closely you can see the small polka dots on the chambray, and you've probably recognized the floral as Cotton+Steel since it's everywhere these days. I purchased both at <a href="http://www.sarahsfabrics.com/">Sarah's Fabrics</a> in Lawrence, KS. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghsXvJHX8EWEReXeahyphenhyphen8-S1UPcOrLbUE8gSPm-WVDHt7R8AUy8hX4KyxETx1bPLnMzpkd_To6xBswj80AD92ESUSJHMbtPT8I9BC3zDhTmJCz7tD33RstM-kkLxlmI0VzfepLYztnzMxA/s1600/Tunic+2.3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghsXvJHX8EWEReXeahyphenhyphen8-S1UPcOrLbUE8gSPm-WVDHt7R8AUy8hX4KyxETx1bPLnMzpkd_To6xBswj80AD92ESUSJHMbtPT8I9BC3zDhTmJCz7tD33RstM-kkLxlmI0VzfepLYztnzMxA/s320/Tunic+2.3.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
For this version of The Tunic Bible pattern I chose the shorty placket and the ruffle sleeves. The ruffle sleeves have the perfect amount of bounce and give the top that extra something. I also shortened the length of the tunic by several inches. <br />

I don't have a lot to add about the pattern since my previous post, but isn't it amazing that my top from yesterday and this top are from the same pattern? I love versatility. </div>

I am beyond excited to be one of the stops on The Tunic Bible's blog tour! <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Tunic-Bible-Interchangeable-Ready---Wear/dp/1617453560/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1475606043&sr=8-1&keywords=the+tunic+bible">The Tunic Bible</a> is a new book written by the always inspiring Sarah Gunn from <a href="http://www.goodbyevalentino.com/">www.goodbyevalentino.com</a> and Julie Starr from <a href="http://www.patternreview.com/">www.patternreview.com</a>. It's already in it's second print run which means it's selling like hotcakes. I was lucky enough to be chosen to sew up a version in advance for the gallery in the book and it was one of my favorite sewing experiences so far. Having said that, the following is an honest review of the pattern. The giveaway is at the very bottom! </div>

Did you ever read the Choose Your Own Adventure books in elementary school? I'm referring to the kind of books where everybody starts at the same place but winds up at different places by the end because of the array of choices made throughout the book. This pattern reminds me of that. The front and back bodice pieces are always the same, but the placket, trim and sleeve choices that are available will take you on a different adventure every time!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My mind ran a mile a minute trying to decide what to do for my version, but eventually I settled on the bib placket, tapered sleeves with a cuff and a shortened tunic that hits at the hips. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLFnBBK6fLj7gMjZoLqQxDwwuQSNf7M7ujMJ8tPQxkjgvM6Gq_beMlskSdsJzhwkFH4N7Ufr-fwqF91S9B5DycG-BwolpeaVgWEOUuzF6p311cFW7q4p5NpsigbPifPqst4xO99snJayk/s1600/218.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLFnBBK6fLj7gMjZoLqQxDwwuQSNf7M7ujMJ8tPQxkjgvM6Gq_beMlskSdsJzhwkFH4N7Ufr-fwqF91S9B5DycG-BwolpeaVgWEOUuzF6p311cFW7q4p5NpsigbPifPqst4xO99snJayk/s320/218.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To achieve my sleeves, I placed the Sewaholic Granville sleeve over the Tunic sleeve and traced the narrower bottom of the Granville sleeve onto the Tunic sleeve. Then I followed the Granville pattern and directions to add the cuff. I like the way the piping looks, but it did make for a lumpier cuff. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2H34cKYssQmA6PiM0MfxAgz_jRFS78cLq3ofV-WIwZxa2yPgrta7Sz53jXYkHm4If_1H5qNKDFiI4qlvePv4Zi8TK6EkHr8oGGDzPkQOIoGIPs8Iz4U2Uk76sh1s_B3S7P_zcgWyv4OY/s1600/216.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2H34cKYssQmA6PiM0MfxAgz_jRFS78cLq3ofV-WIwZxa2yPgrta7Sz53jXYkHm4If_1H5qNKDFiI4qlvePv4Zi8TK6EkHr8oGGDzPkQOIoGIPs8Iz4U2Uk76sh1s_B3S7P_zcgWyv4OY/s320/216.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made what felt like a million pleats on the bib placket, and also on the bottom band. That tag I added to the shirt is #truth, because those pleats took forever. The line in Finding Nemo where Dory says, "Just keep swimming" kept popping into my head except I was saying, "Just keep pleating. Just keep pleating." </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5HFvnC3RW2YwmH1zqCo7rH5bGmtfokvYh56w2UWWHra_wsmHcWEJOlnKFF2U-4MQ6UXk4t3cD5i3AnN58D-kbFiBXrDBxi2s9zSvd4xBDJh5cv1lgb4OQDFdmZyhy4GI63OOMGasSYCk/s1600/271.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5HFvnC3RW2YwmH1zqCo7rH5bGmtfokvYh56w2UWWHra_wsmHcWEJOlnKFF2U-4MQ6UXk4t3cD5i3AnN58D-kbFiBXrDBxi2s9zSvd4xBDJh5cv1lgb4OQDFdmZyhy4GI63OOMGasSYCk/s320/271.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Each pleat measures a half inch long when complete, which means each pleat takes 1.5 inches of fabric. I cut one long rectangular piece of bib fabric 45 inches long, and the same width as the pattern piece. I made one initial pleat to start by folding the fabric under and stitching a line 1/2 inch from the fold. I pressed that down. I continued to fold the fabric an inch from the previous stitch line. I then ironed it to make a crease, and stitched a line 1/2 inch from the previous sewing line. The new stitch line was then folded down to make the pleat, and I repeated that process over and over until the material was as long as the bib pattern piece. At that point, I placed the bib pattern piece on the long rectangular pleated fabric and cut it out. From that point on, you follow the directions in the book. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqyZLTuMrqzbhEm37Kp_MnYjHlaJhkoV28bnavHb1TDQxWMWYwfWHJ-Jd-d_-pl5uQSGhtR-PIedtk-MdGixfX9VYP0keKXbYUrZw9iBhGxioEe_aNQRt2fqkZTQDg6kKW6nwvDgyRu0c/s1600/IMG_0663.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqyZLTuMrqzbhEm37Kp_MnYjHlaJhkoV28bnavHb1TDQxWMWYwfWHJ-Jd-d_-pl5uQSGhtR-PIedtk-MdGixfX9VYP0keKXbYUrZw9iBhGxioEe_aNQRt2fqkZTQDg6kKW6nwvDgyRu0c/s320/IMG_0663.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I cut off several inches from the bottom of the tunic pattern to make it shorter. I have a hard time with shapes that fall way below my hips. I accidentally cut the bottom band a little too narrow, which resulted in the tunic looking more tapered as opposed to flared as it's supposed to. I shouldn't say "supposed to" because this pattern is definitely open to interpretation! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had never made a tunic prior to this pattern. I had never even considered making a tunic prior to this pattern. Now it will be something I return to again and again, not just because of the numerous options available but because the fit is so great. That seemed to be a common statement among the ladies sewing for the book. This is a very well fitting garment. I made zero fit changes to the muslin.</div>

Colette Patterns went back to their roots for this dress and I couldn't be happier about it! I like a two-hour sew as much as the next person, but it's so exciting and rewarding to tackle a bigger project.<br />

I chose Version 1 but added the longer sleeves from Version 2. I sew with a lot of prints, and the line drawings and examples for the launch made me think about stripes to start with. You can definitely go all out with prints, color blocking and piping for this one, but I also wanted to see what it looks like in a solid color without any flair to it. It has a classic look to it, and I like that.</div>

My fabric is a red wool crepe. It's not great to be standing outside in Kansas humidity in a lined wool crepe dress! If you look closely at the pictures you can see that I'm actually starting to melt. My measurements are 34-28-38. Based on the sizing chart I initially chose a 2 in the bust graded to a 6 in the waist and hips. The waist and hips were too big so I went with a straight 2 and it fits well. The bust was too roomy above the darts. I pinned out what I didn't want, measured it (it was a 1/2 inch for me), made a straight line cut on the flat pattern, overlapped one side of the cut over the other 1/2 inch, and taped it.. I'm not sure if that's a legitimate way to adjust a pattern, but it worked for me. </div>

As usual, the directions are very clear and there are always online tutorials for the tricky stuff. I appreciate the lining a lot on this dress. I rarely do a lining unless the pattern calls for it. If my main fabric is too thin I just underline it (maybe because I'm lazy?), but I do like the look of a lining. I will be able to come back to these lining instructions for other projects. <br />
<br />
My lining is Cotton+Steel rayon. It's a happy burst of color!<br />

This dress is very versatile for warmer and also colder months. My next version will most likely be in a floral print with piping, and I'm also wondering what it would look like if the bust piece was color blocked instead of the bottom bodice pieces. So many ideas...so little time.<br />

I can't remember when or where I first saw this pattern in the blogosphere but I thought it would be a good way to jump on the culottes bandwagon. I have such fond memories of wearing culottes in elementary school. This is only the second time I've sewn a Big 4 pattern and it worked out well. <br />

Fit was an issue. I chose a 14 for the bottom based on envelope measurements and thought the top would be OK graded to a 12 at the bust. After my muslin I ended up grading the bodice all the way to a 6. I think the fit on independent patterns is much better. <br />

The fabric is tencel from Mood which is sadly sold out. I really enjoyed working with this fabric and I hope to have enough left over for a pair of Grainline Maritime shorts. It looks like jean material but flows like a really thick rayon. <br />

I added navy piping at the top and along the edges of the belt. I've done piping before but not on a belt. I added it to one long side sewing right sides together and then turned it wrong sides together. I folded in the seam allowance along the edge that didn't have the piping basted to it and top stitched through all the layers. </div>

My pant making process continues! As long as I get a little bit better each time I make a pair I'm considering the make a success.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Everywhere I turn people are raving about this pattern so I had to try it. It doesn't disappoint! The size 6 fits with no alterations which is the thing that always makes me the most nervous when I start thinking about sewing any type of pant. <br />

The Grainline tutorial for sewing the fly is amazing. It makes it so easy! I'm proud of how my fly turned out on this one. Sorry you'll have to turn your head sideways. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I chose a Ralph Lauren denim from Mood and it is extremely stiff. I'm hoping if I wash the shorts a thousand times they will loosen up a bit. Choosing fabric is hard. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgG8WmsGi1IFXuAliEEf6jgSL8_6xo5dk5yLE2NsCcxki2wLgQ37TulJ-D4sQ0KpGtnYWYBX77IFIkTjA0NqIWV8KFkLr2AJTmrcYKGz4CTBgi8w7H-Kr1Tu62iuOIGqjkvwy36UWk3AA/s1600/347.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgG8WmsGi1IFXuAliEEf6jgSL8_6xo5dk5yLE2NsCcxki2wLgQ37TulJ-D4sQ0KpGtnYWYBX77IFIkTjA0NqIWV8KFkLr2AJTmrcYKGz4CTBgi8w7H-Kr1Tu62iuOIGqjkvwy36UWk3AA/s320/347.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I don't know why pants are so hard for me to gear up for mentally. I jump into everything else with both feet but jeans give me pause. I think they seem intimidating to think about, but this pair was truly easy! I'm not sure how often I will wear these but practice makes perfect.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm not so sure why it took me so long to buy this pattern. I own quite a few Colette patterns but skipped past this one when it was released. I love a high waisted flared skirt with gathers so I'm glad I went back for it!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Version 1 is easy to fit and sew. The skirt is gathered so once the waistband fits you're on track. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I never choose striped fabric because I'm intimidated by matching up the stripes. I liked <a href="https://www.moodfabrics.com/catalogsearch/result/?cat=&q=Navy%2FWhite+Abstract+Grid+Rayon-Cotton+Poplin">this fabric</a> so much from Mood that I decided to go for it. I think I did ok but I took note of things to watch for in the future. The fabric is a cotton/rayon blend and when it came out of the wash it felt sort of puffy and springy like crepe. Highly recommend it! </div>

I shortened the length by 2.5 inches and there are still quite a few buttons to sew on. I like the look of buttons but greatly prefer sewing in a zip!</div>
